Recycling rate

On this page, we present recycling statistics from FTI’s owners (Svensk Plaståtervinning, Returkartong, Svensk Glasåtervinning and Metallkretsen) for the 2020 operational year.

The recycling statistics reported to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are based on new measurement points that make it easier to see how much packaging has been recycled and used to make new products. Energy recovery is no longer included in the recycling statistics. Only the material that can be reprocessed into new products and replace virgin raw material is counted. The statistics will also be broken down into household packaging and commercial packaging. All data is reported in accordance with The EPA’s guidance (link in swedish).

Swedish government’s new and ambitious targets

Under the Swedish government’s new targets, which are more ambitious than those set by the EU, at least 65 percent of all packaging placed on the market must be recycled to make new products. The new statistics for 2020 from FTI’s owners show that the overall recycling rate for glass, paper, plastic and metal packaging was 72 percent. However, we have yet to achieve the specific recycling targets for plastic and paper packaging.

*Refers to the proportion of the amount of packaging placed on the market and reported to FTI that was collected and reprocessed into secondary raw material to replace virgin raw material (according to the EU’s new definition of recycling in Directive 94/62/EC). The materials companies only handle packaging from Swedish households. Commercial packaging waste is handled by commercial recycling operators. However, FTI and the materials companies have undertaken to gather statistics and report collection and recycling rates to the EPA for this packaging as well.

Our responsibility in the recycling journey

Together with our owners (Svensk Plaståtervinning, Returkartong, Svensk Glasåtervinning and Metallkretsen), we take responsibility for ensuring that the collected material is used to make new products. All of the material we collect via our recycling stations and curbside collection services is sent to various recycling facilities. There it is sorted for further processing into new products.

Would you like to know exactly how much was collected for recycling last year? Visit our material collected page to see kg per resident and municipality, and visit our collection rate page to see the percentage of material that was collected in relation to the amount of material placed on the market by FTI-affiliated producers.

About the recycling rates

The recycling rate for Sweden is compiled by the EPA based on their calculations of data from FTI and other operators. The data is reported in accordance with the EU’s new definition of recycling in Directive 94/62/EC.

The materials companies only handle packaging from Swedish households. The packaging consumed by companies is handled by commercial recycling operators. However, FTI and the materials companies have undertaken to gather statistics and report collection and recycling rates to the EPA for this packaging as well.
